Why to Celebrate National Drink Wine Day

Quick!, think of the first reason that comes to mind!

It’s hopefully that you actually like wine, but close seconds include, I’m hating my job today, I’m stressed out (because of my job or school, or kids…both of which are pretty much jobs) or because the weekend is too far away (Yes, I realize it’s only a day away but that’s SOOOOO far and honestly, it’s because your JOB is in the way again).

So…hmm, looks like National Drink Wine Day might also be acknowledged as, Drink Because of Your Job Day!

Nevertheless, today is about popping a cork, twisting off a cap or (while not encouraged by this wine lover) tapping a bag or box and filling your glass.  Alternatives to glasses may include but are not limited to:

  • Solo cups
  • Coffee mugs
  • Your water bottle
  • A plastic pink sippy cup
*Been there, done all that and honestly hey, do what you have to do.

While wine has evolved throughout history from where it’s produced and the grapes used to make it to the technology and vehicles that get it to your lips, let’s take a few moments to appreciate the craft and passion that has made this beverage the most sacred in human history.  Yes, I know water was important, but wine is the more sacred beverage…don’t agree?  Go away and stop reading.

So while you wait for the clock to tick down to the punch out time, or while you have a glass of vino to enjoy while reading this (you’re really lucky if you get to do both at the same time) here’s my own little list of reasons to drink wine today…and every day:

  1. Wine predates all the major world religions – and most major religious people drink it!  “______(insert deity) Bless Wine!”

  2. It’s local!  … if it’s not, move, you clearly live in an uninhabitable environment.

  3. It’s flexible…everyone likes flexible people, so how can you not like a flexible beverage that’s great with or without food, in any mood and with friends or alone, year-round!

  4. It educated you…honestly, how many other beverages, or words for that matter do you readily know in multiple languages?!  (wine, vino, vin, wino…yes, that last one’s Polish for “wine,” I guess it’s in my blood)

  5. Because No “World’s oldest living person” ever attributes water or milk to their longevity, but many say a glass of wine regularly helped!

  6. It’s a multi-function mood stabilizer making happy people happier, stressed people chill out, sad people fall asleep and relatives bearable.

  7. At some point you felt like MacGyver because you used something other than a corkscrew to get wine free from its glass and corked prison!

  8. Betty White drinks wine.

Enough said.  Pull out or pick up a bottle or two, invite a friend or several to join and DRINK a communal glass of history’s most revered beverage.  But please, as Helen Mirren asked of all us “fun, solid, respectable human beings” in her Super Bowl 50 commercial, #GiveADamn and don’t drive drunk when the celebrating is over (enjoy responsibly).
