The 3rd Wine of Swissmas…

…is one of the best from Italy.  Barolo!  I’ll spare the suspense but will not skip the details.

Peggy Farrell of Swiss Cellars champions our 3rd Wine of Swissmas today.  Farrell, our Milwaukee wine diva and Old World wine snob (don’t worry she’s really nice, I promise!) has been enjoying her wine for a long time…how long?  Well she claims it’s been her beverage of choice since her First Communion (whoops)!

That’s a fair amount of time for things to develop, like her knowledge and experience of wines as well as some fantastic Barolos that have been cellaring since those days.

While many revere long-cellared Barolos that earn their prestige and supreme essence over the years, many overlook the production of great Barolos that are available now and drink well, now.   Guidobono’s Le Coste di Monforte Barolo 2010 is one of those young gems.

2010 Guidobono Barolo (100% Nebbiolo) from the famed Piedmont.  14.5% ABV | Avg Retail $34-$42 per bottle.

Swiss Cellars has long-carried the Guidobono Barbera and Nebbiolo vintages and has quickly embraced sharing the Le Coste di Monforte Barolo this year in Wisconsin.

Tuning customers into higher priced wines that Barolos usually fall among means having a respectable wine and fair pricing and with this wine both are easy.  Guidobono’s Barolo comes from the vineyards of the Monforte commune where the limestone/sandstone soil mix produces a more structured or bigger wine with very concentrated licorice and spices.

The elegant nose of raspberry is very prominent in this brick-colored king of wines.  It fills the mouth with extensive flavor in harmony, a fine showing now for a wine that is suitable for aging for another solid 10 years as well.

The restaurant scene has taken notice of the value and quality of this Barolo quickly.  The Milwaukee area boasts several fine restaurants sharing this wine already such as Weissgerber’s, Ristorante Bartolotta, Tenuta’s Italian Restaurant and OGAN in the Green Bay area.  Try it by the glass or buy a bottle.  As of publishing it’s available at Discount Liquor, Ray’s Liquor and Thief Wine in the Milwaukee area as well as Cafe D’Vine in Onalaska.  More locations coming soon, but it never hurts to ask your favorite local wine shop or bar to get it for you in advance!

Impress the family this holiday season with an Old World wine wonder that’s ready for sharing now and smile to yourself for the value of a deal it was.
